This song was the one that kicked off the album for me. I had an old Guitar Pro file that was 2 measures long and was technically an arpeggiation of a single chord: an Ebm6/9. I put a session together in Reaper and starting building riffs and melodic lines off of the original chord. After working on a ton of sections that varied in feel and time signatures, I starting piecing them together and ended up with a song that was pushing 12 minutes in length. I decided to keep it at that length and use it as motivation to keep writing and to finally utilize a lot of the older ideas I had for a solo album. Splitting this one up into more digestible chunks felt natural to do. This song is a moody, rollercoaster of a ride that goes from teh heavies, softer parts, and proggy goodness while maintaining a detective-esque vibe throughout. It felt right to use this as the album closer since it’s quite different from a lot of the other songs, but uses many of the main themes that occurred across the album.
If anyone has not seen season 1 of True Detective, you are missing out in a big way. That season inspired me in many ways and served as motivation to think differently about a lot of things. Matthew McConaughey’s portrayal of Rust Cohle was intriguing on many levels and the things he said on the show truly made me think about life and its many facets, both positive and negative. The quote I used for this song exemplifies a cold, yet undeniable truth that resonated with me after the season had ended.
